Ronin
During the 10th century they were farmers who established themselves in regions not yet owned by Buddhist monasteries or nobles of the imperial court. Thus they could avoid the crushing taxes in these regions. During the Edo-period this name was given to all masterless Bushi or Samurai. Their master was either dead or outlawed. A number of these Ronin taught martial arts, others became mercenary bodyguards, or protectors of villages. MAny turned to a life of crime.
Many schools (Ryu) were founded by these Ronin, the most famous was Miyamoto Musashi.
